So I'm car shopping and I found what could be a potentially good match but.....

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Kinja'd!!!

It's 2wd. Normally this wouldn't be an issue for me but it's a Jeep and to me it feels hollow like I'm putting a push up bra and yoga pants on my daily driver. It's just false advertising. Other than that there are many advantages to me. It's a manual, rwd vehicle with a bulletproof drivetrain that looks fantastic. The 2wd drivetrain gives me less to go wrong with better gas mileage (18 combined!). But I feel like I'll be wondering what I could have had if I paid more every week at the pump. Also whats the point in a 2wd suv, I sacrifice handling and efficiency for styling and ride height on a vehicle that can't really handle the rough stuff much better than a car anyway. The only thing I can think of is that it will probably more reliable and durable than your average car anyway with it being a 4.0 manual Cherokee. That an there is always the solace that I could turn it into this:

Is it a live rear axle? They're pretty fun off-road too... just not so good in mud/snow

Yeah live rear with solid front and rear axles.

Uh... That picture answered your own question. You need it. And you need to race it.

Do you think I could run it in an scca autocross?

Personally, I would never buy a RWD pickup or SUV. That's just me though.

That's a very good question. I've never done an SCCA autocross event, unfortunately, so I don't know any of the rules. Brian might though.

If you stick to the hard stuff like rough trails and rocks/shale you could have a ton of fun. You'd be surprised what 2wd can do with the right rubber on, and your ground clearance is good too.

There's nothing wrong with a 2 wheeler. They're still very capable in snow and off road with the right tires.

I had a 2WD/5 speed Commanche with Pro Comp 31x10.50s on Eagle Alloys. That thing was a way better trail rig than I ever expected.

Plus.. The XJ/MJ is one of the easiest trucks to convert to 4wd on the planet.

I was younger and dumb when I had it and never tracked mileage much. I was commuting about 200-225 miles a week then and usually only had to fill up once a week.

I had a 1994 Jeep Cherokee sport, manual and only a 2WD. Honestly, my favorite car to this day (currently have a 2014 FoST). I had it for 7 years from my senior year of HS up until after I graduated from college and I still kick myself when I traded it in. Did it because I was commuting 60 miles a day at the time and she only had around 150k on the clock. Never had any issues with snow and never got it stuck anywhere; never went "off roading" or mudding like some people do so 2WD was never an issue. Bulletproof engine, no major problems. I loved that car, so I am pretty biased and would jump at the chance to get one if I were you.

that is a good sell, what kind of mpgs did you get. I commute over 300 miles per week and make minimum wage so its an important factor.

wh..what do you think yoga pants do, exactly? LOL.

Anywho, if you ever did feel the need for 4WD, this is one of the easiest vehicles to covert out there, and Jeep parts are plentiful. Also not like there's anyone who will get bent out of shape over it not being original or whatever.

I traded it in solely because of the mpg's, sadly. I don't remember the specific mpg's because I was a poor post-college guy in his early-mid 20's trying to start out in the real world but it was bad. Bad enough to trade it in. I think it was in the 18's and it was mostly highway mileage from Lawrence KS to Olathe KS (20+ miles) and back each day. I rode my bike around town mostly. So if you commute then it is a big no.

I could swing it if it was around 19 but most of my route is 40 mph with some stop and go so it would probably be lower than what you got plus it is a lot older now so I'm not expecting it to be as efficient as it used to be. That is a beautiful rig by the way.

I say go for it if you like it. If it were a 2wd wrangler it'd be a different story.

Put the right tires on it and you'll be able to conquer most things you throw at it.

I once tried to drive up an icy hill in a jeep that wouldn't go into 4wd. It could not get up that hill at all then I tried to climb that same hill in my civic and made it no problem. if you live a place with an actual winter, either buy a 4x4 or buy a rwd vehical that would actually be fun .

If MPG is a deciding factor then I feel you're looking at the wrong vehicle altogether.

I need the mileage to be around 20mpg but this jeep is at 2500 which is 1500 lower than my budget so the lower price could offset the mileage for a while

Kinja'd!!! SlickMcRick > Captain of the Enterprise

Hmmm that actually makes sense. That'll definitely offset for a while. See if you can negotiate a little more out of him. Offer $2200 if you can. If it's a no go just pay the full $2500. That's much different than my commuter car. It was a 1990 Escort GT. Loved that little thing. Would love to get another for cheap if I found one but apparently they're all rusted away or were destroyed in the Cash for Clunkers program.
